하이든이 이 곡의 '알렐루야 코러스' 연주를 듣다가 코러스의 높은 합창에 감동 받아 무의식 중에 '저편에 신의 영광이 나타났도다'라고 외치며 오라토리오 "천지 창조"를 작곡하겠다는 결심을 했다는 일화로 유명한 이 곡은 "천지 창조"와 멘델스존의 "엘리아"와 함께 세계 3대 오라토리오로 일컬어지고 있다. '메시아'라는 말은 구세주를 뜻하는 말로 본래는 '기름을 부은 자'라는 뜻이다. 이 뜻이 다시 '신으로부터 선택을 받은 자 혹은 괴로운 자를 해방하는 자' 등의 뜻으로 쓰이게 되었고, 물론 여기서는 예수 그리스도를 말하는 것이다.   성경의 구절에서 인용한 이 곡의 가사는 그리스도의 출현, 전도, 부활, 승천을 제재로 하고 있다. 합창곡 '알렐루야 코러스'는 오늘날에도 가장 널리 알려진 곡으로  1742년 런던 초연에 참석한 영국의 왕 조지2세가 ‘알렐루야 코러스’
부분에서 감격한 나머지 자기도 모르게 기립했다는 일화가 전해지며 
이 부분에서는 모든 청중이 기립해서 듣는 관습이 생겼다.

 Handel은, 독일 태생으로 이탈리아에서 활동하다가  영국으로 귀화하여 영국인으로 생을 마감한 국제적 명성의 작곡가이자 바로크 시대의 작곡가로, 이 곡은 그가 54세 때인 1741년 8월 22일 작곡을 시작하고 24일만에 완성했다.
그 동안 오페라에 주력해 극장까지 운영을 했었지만  계속 실패만을 거듭하고, 뇌출혈로 반신불수까지 되는 등 생의 심한 좌절의 연속이었을 때
찰스 제넨스가 보내온 시를 읽다 감격하여, 단기간에 그 대곡을 완성할 수 있었고 그의 삶도 · 음악도 회복되었다고 한다. 이 곡은 자신의 어떤 곡보다도 많이 연주되었는데 생전에만 50여 차례 연주되었다고 한다.
